National Gallery- Department of Nafplio: An Encounter with History

The National Gallery Department of Nafplio, known as the Alexandros Soutsos Museum, is a beacon of culture that highlights the historical and artistic heritage of Greece. It was founded in 2004 under the direction of Marina Lambraki-Plaka and the initiative of the prominent Nafplian Apostolos Botso. The building, granted by the Municipality of Nafplion, was renovated and equipped museologically by the Public Benefit Foundation “Alexander S. Onassis”, offering an ideal space for the presentation of the works.

A Hub of Knowledge and Culture in the Heart of the City.

The department of the National Gallery in Nafplio is a world where history is revived, offering a unique opportunity to admire works of outstanding Greek and international artists with a central theme of the Greek War of Independence. It is a place that inspires and excites, playing an important role in the cultural identity of the city.
The museum’s collection, housed in an imposing neoclassical building, includes fine works by great Greek painters such as Th. Vryzakis, F. Margaritis, Dion. Tsokos, N. Gyzis, Nik. Lytras and others. These works were inspired by the liberation struggle of the Greeks, capturing and giving a tangible form to the historical character of the city. Through this painting, the heroic deeds of the Greeks are memorized, removing their realistic character and highlighting them in an ideal, almost mythical world.
By visiting the Alexandros Soutsos Museum, visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a unique artistic experience, full of history and culture. The museum, through its valuable collections, offers a vivid narrative of Greek art and history, making it a must-see destination for every art and culture lover. The exhibitions and the works it hosts reveal the passion, power and spirit of the Greek artistic genus, making a visit to the museum an unforgettable experience.
